foods that fight stress x national stress awareness month

did you know that april is NATIONAL STRESS AWARENESS month? this has been held every april since 1992 to bring awareness to stress- which can have effects on mental health, physical health and emotional well-being. while there are many ways to tackle stress, I truly believe that one of the best ways is with our diet and how we nourish our bodies.  
we've heard it before. FOOD HEALS! and that statement is true. the way we nourish our bodies is crucial for every aspect of our physical and inner health. 
if you've been following me for a while now, you know that nutrition and its role in fitness interests me, which is why i've made it a big aspect of my career.

in lieu of national stress awareness month, i'm sharing my favorite food recommendations for fighting stress. stress increases the level of the hormone cortisol in our bodies, which can cause our bodies to store fat around the midsection. by eating foods that are linked to mood-boosting, calming benefits, we can help prevent this from happening, while also keeping our emotional & mental health at ease, too. 

  • LEAFY GREENS
  • OATS 
  • DARK CHOCOLATE (generally 72% or darker)
  • CASHEWS, WALNUTS, PISTACHIOS + ALMONDS
  • AVOCADO
  • SALMON
  • YOGURT
  • GRASS-FED BEEF
  • GREEN, BLACK & CHAMOMILE TEA
  • GARLIC
  • ORANGES
  • BERRIES
  • BANANAS
  • TURKEY BREAST

I mean...yum! 

stress is a part of life--and i'm sure we've all experienced some form of it. however, what matters is how we handle it & avoid it! by being mindful of our practices, actions & lifestyle, we can avoid the harmful consequences stress comes with.
